State Transformation and Development in a Changing World

Latest developments in Southeast Asian countries best capture the essence of “state transformation” and how this instigates changes across various domains, including political, economic and social. Recent national and state elections in Thailand and Malaysia, Singapore’s internal political jolts, and anxiety over Indonesia’s upcoming presidential election each reflects the people’s changing perception and expectation towards their respective government, compelling the state and other political players to adapt new ways of playing politics and governance. Additionally, ongoing socio-economic challenges spurred by inflation, disruption to global supply-chain, slowdown in several key economies and the climate crisis have put additional pressures on today’s states to maintain relevance in the eyes of the population. These pressures to change, however, are not exclusive to Southeast Asia, as the nature of these ongoing challenges is global.

With this in the background, the Department of Political Science, AbdulHamid AbuSulayman Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences (AHAS KIRKHS) – International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), in collaboration with the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Jenderal Soedirman University and stratsea.com – is organising an online conference entitled “State Transformation and Development in a Changing World”.
